The International Law Book Facility is seeking old
editions of legal texts that are particularly needed by law schools,
law societies,
pro bono groups and other institutions and individuals in Africa, Asia
and the Caribbean. The books we distribute may be second hand, but
they’re not second best! We’re focused on identifying the
core legal texts that will make an impact.
If you still have an old
edition of a book, preferably from 2000 onwards, that you think may be a text that is useful, download the ILBF booklist to
see if it is one of our preferred titles.
You can help us to reduce our costs and save volunteers’ time by sending only those books on the book list. While almost all of your donated books quickly find a home in the libraries of our recipients (which include universities and law societies), there are some that sadly just cannot be used.
The ILBF ultimately bears the costs of the temporary storage and recycling of these books and our volunteers’ time is taken up in unpacking and sorting them. For example, the ILBF is often sent numerous copies of textbooks on English civil procedure. Unfortunately, these are of little use in other jurisdictions because of the different procedural rules that apply. The costs and time taken in disposing of such books are significant, and often we receive as many as 10 in a single box. We would rather use our volunteers’ time and ILBF donations, to ship the books to recipients.
That said, if you are ever in any doubt as to whether to send us a law book and it is not on the book list, please do contact us in advance (using the contact link at the top of the page) and we can indicate whether it would be useful. In any event please contact the ILBF before making a donation.
